about

Adelaide is a strange place. A small city, or a big country town?

Benjamin Marwe, musician best known for his work with the seminal outsider rock band Bad//Dreems, once overheard a story from a fellow South Australian musician in an unkempt state who quite eloquently declared that you could walk out of a pub at one end of Hindley Street, completely leathered, and by the time you had arrived at the other end, you would be startled sober. No doubt through the visions of carnage and enthralling heat on any given weekend night out side kebab stores next door to cop shops next door to strip clubs and so on.

Wedding Motel is an Australian self produced solo act based in Adelaide, South Australia. It is the side project of artist and musician Benjamin Marwe, who also fronts the band Bad//Dreems, and is a long term collaborator with fellow songwriter, Alex Cameron, also of Bad//Dreems and the founder and director of Endless Recordings.

Wedding Motel attempts to blend eerie-sad-disco with dystopian-folk motifs, blanketed in a lyrically blurred stream of consciousness. Originally the project was a focus to keep creative during the coronavirus lockdown of 2020, but has since become a much more developed and professional musical outlet for Marwe.

Lyrically, Wedding Motel draws upon reflective passions, childhood memories and self deprecating imagery. In his track ‘District Meltdown,’ Marwe laments:
“Why does everyone know how to debate.
The sun was hotter in 2002. I woke up and the world was empty, now I don’t know what to do.”

‘Part Timer,’ the first single from the EP which is set for release on October 1 through Endless Recordings, explores the realisation of self-mediocrity, the swamp of ingrained alcoholism, and the want to shed old skin in an effort to create new skin. The need to hide away from the noise and rid yourself of the scum.

Marwe explains:
“The EP was an amalgamation of revised demos and new recordings. Originally intended to be a 9 track album, I decided to cull a few and settle on an EP. Originally I recorded the track alone in Adelaide in 2018 on Garage band, then re-recorded it alone in Adelaide in 2020, again on Garage band”.

Wedding Motel’s ‘Childhood Beach’ will be released through Endless Recordings November 19.

Wedding Motel - a place where people gather to talk backwards and over one another, whilst the broken jukebox churns out distorted chin music for the lonely.
